Female athletes are often faced with major inequalities in the world of sports. They are underpaid, overlooked, and are faced with major criticism both on and off the court. When looking at collaborative sneakers or partnerships with athletes, female athletes are extremely underrepresented in comparison to their male counterparts. However female athletes, such as Serena Williams and Natasha Cloud, are changing those statistics slowly but surely. Naomi Osaka, three-time Grand Slam singles champion, is adding to the list of athletes who aim to not only make a change within the world of sports but transcend that change to other areas. Her upcoming collaborative sneaker with the Swoosh and COMME des GARÇONS (CDG) is a reminder to stay humble and use your platform, big or small, for good.

Born to a Haitian father and Japanese mother, Naomi Osaka has proven that she is a force to be reckon with both on and off the court. Her professional career began back in 2013 when Osaka was just a month shy of turning 16 years old. Since then she has gone on to win numerous awards with the most notable becoming the first Japanese player to win a Grand Slam singles title and is the first Asian player to hold the top ranking in singles. Off the court, her rise to fame in her native country of Japan has undoubtedly helped changed the narrative of what many perceive a Japanese person to look like. In August of this year, Osaka dropped out of her semifinals match in response to the deaths of numerous innocent Black lives at the hands of police brutality. For her, it was a step that needed to be taken in order to get the conversation started in a predominately white sport.

Needless to say, we stan Naomi Osaka and when we got word of her collab with Nike, it immediately had us drawn in. The Nike x CDG Naomi Osaka Blazer Mid features a mainly white canvas upper with matching leather swooshes and pops of grey suede. Platinum colored CDG and Osaka branding is drawn atop the entire upper in bold typography. The sole has a subtle yellow tone for the classic Blazer Mid vintage effect. The sneaker is finished off with Naomi Osakas signature and a heartfelt message that reads “Home is where the heart is.”
