Original Post: March 9th, 2022

March marks the beginning of Women’s History Month but it also means that Air Max Day is fast approaching. Air Max Day, celebrated every year by the sneaker community, honors both the past and shows us what to look forward to in the future. This year, Nike has a new Air Max iteration set to drop to kick off the Air Max Day festivities.

The Nike Air Max 1 ‘Wabi-Sabi’ pays tribute to the Japanese principle of the same name which focuses on embracing imperfections and finding beauty in flaws. The sneaker’s midsole has a cracked texture that reflects this principle and mimics Japanese pottery repaired by kintsugi, the art of sealing cracks with gold lacquer to celebrate and emphasize their defects. Earth tones cover the upper with off-white topstitching throughout. “XXXV” is printed on the heel to commemorate the silhouette’s 35th-anniversary while “3.26” is seen on the tongue tag to honor Air Max Day.
