Puma Just Released a Women's Running Shoe That's Tailored Specifically For The Female Foot

Women’s running shoes make up a hefty chunk of the sneaker market. Striking a balance between style and function is the ultimate goal, keeping current footwear trends in mind while optimizing the shoe for performance. Puma accomplishes both of these objectives with their new women-specific running shoe, the XX Nitro.

Made with the biomechanics of the female foot in mind, this new running shoe is unlike women’s running shoes that precede it. Since this is a women’s-specific running shoe, there is no men’s version; when Puma says they’re creating a shoe only made for women, they mean it. Unlike some women’s shoes that have simply been scaled down from the men’s version, these were crafted around female feet. Named after the female XX chromosome DNA sequence, this sneaker was tested on a group of women runners before release. Puma teamed up with the University of Massachusetts Biomechanics Lab to conduct a large-scale running study of female runners, who collectively logged over 36,000 miles over eight weeks. Their research found that 81% of the runners preferred the XX Nitro over the control sneaker, specifically for its support and comfort.

The XX Nitro is designed to hug the woman’s heel more closely than other running shoes, while offering a narrower fit throughout the body. The instep and arch of the foot get extra support with this sneak, as well. Chunky Nitro foam midsoles give these shoes a bit of platform look, layered beneath the heel (almost has a VaporWaffle vibe, no?). Puma’s RUNGUIDE technology runs through a firm density rim around the heel, aiding in foot strike alignment for the runner.
