Brandon Blackwood founded his namesake brand in the spring of 2015 with 4 initial pieces. From there, the Jamaican and Chinese designer expanded his collection to feature handbags that have been featured in major fashion publications such as Vogue and Elle just to name a few. However, what is more attention-grabbing than the bags themselves is what goes on behind the scenes. Materials for each of these bags is both ethically sourced to provide us with accessories that have high quality details, are trend-forward, and long lasting.
Aside from their beautiful construction, these accessories have a message. One of their most popular styles has a message right on the front that reads ‘END SYSTEMIC RACISM’. Along with that, a portion of the proceeds is donated towards funding Pro Bono legal assistance provided by the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights who’s principal mission is to secure equal justice for all through the rule of law, targeting in particular the inequities confronting African Americans and other racial and ethnic minorities. The brand has also made plans to continue his donation efforts to fund organizations that aid Black/POC youth.
It’s important to not only continue to advocate for important social issues but to also support our own communities and one way we can do that is by supporting Black and POC owned businesses.
