Sneakers have become a common thread that holds us ladies together, and the reason we love to empower our audience is because of the industry we're in. Whether it be our corporate jobs or our online sneaker communities, we can't ignore the fact that it is male-dominated. This means we are fighting for a seat at the table yet again.
But why? We have a common interest. We tie valuable memories to our sneakers just like the fellas. We are interested in the stories behind the popular silhouettes and grew up rockin' them tough before we knew what a grail was. Ladies love to style outfits with shoes, but does wearing a dress with kicks make us less credible in some way. DEFINITELY NOT. Let's collectively break down this struggle into 3 reasons why being a female sneaker lover can grind our gears.
#3 - SHE'S JUST A TOMBOY...
Bruh, I can clean up nice. Why do I specifically need to be put into a box (pun intended) and be labeled? Can’t females do both - be sexy and casual? Wearing t-shirts and jeans with sneakers does not automatically qualify you as a tomboy. Being a woman, I typically start with a sneaker and build my outfit from the ground up. It’s all about being comfortable for me as an active mother who runs around getting things done. Regardless if you're aging like fine wine in your 30s or tackling the to do list with kids, it doesn’t mean you need to wear J.Crew with flats all day long. CUT OUT THE LABELS, K?
#2 - AM I THE ACCESSORY OR IS THE SHOE?
Sex sells in marketing and I understand that, but what I want to see is more campaigns for women aligning with my everyday life and what I can relate to. I love Nicki Minaj, but showing off her assets in some Nikes is not going to sway me on a purchase. Women showing off their bodies can be done very tastefully, but the everyday woman wants to see how this product will benefit her and her lifestyle. While many brand campaigns have been leaning on inclusion for the female consumer, we need to see more of it. Don’t market us as the accessory, and be strategic with who is chosen as brand ambassadors.
#1 - QUALITY OVER QUANTITY... HELLO!
We can’t say it enough that we want an equal opportunity in quality products/materials used on our shoes. We all know that grade school sizes are not exactly made the same way as the options in the men’s department. Ladies have spent years perusing the grade school section, and it would be nice to have more women’s exclusives all our own. Imagine if we had more small feet tribe storefronts. Brick and mortar establishments that specialized in small sizing and women’s silhouettes only. In 2017, e-shopping is life but stores where you can try on product and see in person is also a preference.
